Episode Seven:

How To Pronounce All 50 U.S. States

Jan 12, 2019

Pronouncing names of countries, states, and territories in your second language can be complicated! It’s especially difficult because you might have a certain pronunciation of those places in your native language, but it sounds quite different in English.

Today, we’ll practice the pronunciation of the 50 U.S. states. We’ll also look at the most difficult states to pronounce and talk about common errors people make. Even though you might think you know how to pronounce U.S. states like New York and California because you’ve heard those states mentioned in your language, you may not actually be pronouncing them correctly.

In this podcast, you will learn which states you might be saying incorrectly. You’ll also get a chance to practice the U.S. states’ names several times so you can pronounce them just like an American would.

If you are listening to this as part of your preparation for the US Naturalization test, check out all of my resources for the United States citizenship test here.

There are several names that are most difficult that others because the spelling of the state and the way it’s pronounced don’t seem to match. Don’t worry! We’ll talk about each of those hard words so you never make a mistake with them again. The challenging states’ names that I discuss in this podcast are as follows:

Arkansas
Illinois
Louisiana
Massachusetts
Michigan
Missouri
Rhode Island

Then follow along with this list of U.S. states as we pronounce them together:

Alabama
