Como já explicamos em artigos anteriores, existem nomenclaturas que mudam de país para país, ou seja, o título das formações variam de país para país. Por exemplo, no Brasil, um MBA é título de Pós-Graduação em nível lato sensu, enquanto que nos EUA, o curso com a mesma nomenclatura tem o título de Mestrado. Siglas do Mundo Acadêmico Internacional
Títulos Acadêmicos
B.A. – “Bachelor of the Arts”, algo como “bacharel das artes” em português, em uma tradução literal.
B.S. ou B.Sc. – “Bachelor of Science” ou “bacharel em ciências” em português, em uma tradução literal.
BMus – “Bachelor of Music” ou bacharelado em música.
M.A. – “Master of the Arts” ou “mestre das artes” em português, em uma tradução literal.
MEd – “Master of Education” ou “mestrado em educação”.
M.Sc. – “Master of Sciences” ou “mestre das ciências” em português, em uma tradução literal.
M.Res. – “Master of Research” ou “mestre em pesquisa” em português, em uma tradução literal.
MBA – “Master in Business Administration” ou mestrado em administração de negócios.
MPA – “Master in Public Administration” ou mestrado em administração pública.
MPP – “Master in Public Policy” ou mestrado em políticas públicas.
LL.M. – “Legum Magister” ou “mestre das leis”, título dado a quem conclui o mestrado em Direito.
Ph.D. – “Philosophy Doctor” ou “doutor de filosofia”.
Provas internacionais
ACT – refere-se ao American College Testing é um teste que avalia o conhecimento do aluno em inglês, de diversas disciplinas e é usado pelas universidades americanas em seus processos de admissão. No Brasil, um teste similar é o ENEM.
CAE – refere-se à prova e ao certificado da Cambridge English: Advanced. Certificado nível C2 no CEFR – Quadro Comum de Referência Europeu de línguas.
IELTS – é a sigla para International English Language Testing System, e designa uma prova de inglês gerenciada por uma série de organizações diferentes, como o British Council, o IDP: IELTS Australia e a Cambridge Assessment English. Via de regra, o IELTS é a prova que costuma ser exigida por programas do Reino Unido, Austrália e outros países anglófonos fora da América. No continente americano, em geral pede-se mais o TOEFL.
SAT – refere-se ao Scholastic Aptitude Test, ou teste de aptidão escolar. Trata-se de um dos exames mais comuns dos EUA, utilizado pelas universidades americanas em seus processos de admissão para graduação. É uma prova utilizada como forma de ingresso no ensino superior.
TOEFL – refere-se ao Test Of English as a Foreign Language, é uma das provas de língua inglesa mais solicitadas por universidades e instituições de ensino em geral. Ela é criada e administrada por uma organização chamada ETS (Educational Testing Service).
GMAT – é a sigla para Graduate Management Admission Test ou teste de admissão para pós-graduação em administração. Ele é uma prova de admissão exigida pela maior parte das escolas de negócios nos Estados Unidos e na Europa. O teste avalia a chamada “inteligência mental” e a habilidade de tomar decisões sob pressão de tempo.
GRE – é a sigla para Graduate Record Examination, algo como “exame do histórico acadêmico”. O GRE é dividido em três áreas: raciocínio verbal, raciocínio quantitativo e escrita crítica. Trata-se de um exame padronizado, semelhante ao GMAT. Para todos os casos, o teste é realizado por computador, em um centro de aplicação.
Instituições e Certificados
BTEC – é a sigla para Business and Technology Education Council ou Conselho Britânico de Tecnologia e Educação que é uma organização do Reino Unido que outorga qualificações vocacionais.
ESL – é a sigla para English as a Second Language ou Inglês como Segunda Língua que são cursos de inglês para estudantes que não possuem o idioma como primeira língua.
GRE – é a sigla para Graduate Record Examination ou Exame padrão norte-americano, realizado em computadores, para avaliar estudantes graduados.
HNC – é a sigla para Higher National Certificate ou Certificado Nacional de Ensino Superior que é um certificado de qualificação de ensino superior ou de educação continuada do Reino Unido. Equivale ao primeiro ano de uma graduação.
HND – é a sigla para Higher National Diploma ou Diploma Nacional de Ensino Superior que é o diploma de qualificação de ensino superior do Reino Unido. Equivale aos dois primeiros anos de uma graduação.
NVQ – é a sigla para National Vocational Qualification ou Qualificação Vocacional Nacional que é um curso prático, vocacional e de treinamento encontrado no Reino Unido.
TESOL – é a sigla para Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages ou Ensino de Inglês para Falantes de Outras Línguas que são cursos para professores de inglês que lecionam para estudantes que não tem o inglês como primeira língua.

TOEFL Reading Practice Passage
Gorillas are ground-dwelling, predominantly herbivorous apes that inhabit the forest of central Sub-Saharan Africa. The genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorillas and the western gorillas (both critically endangered), and either four or five subspecies. They are the largest living primates. The DNA of gorillas is highly similar to that of humans, from 95 to 99% depending on what is included, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the chimpanzees and bonobos.
Gorillas' natural habitats cover tropical or subtropical forest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although their range covers a small percentage of Sub-Saharan Africa, gorillas cover a wide range of elevations. The mountain gorilla inhabits the Albertine Rift montane cloud forests of the Virunga Volcanoes, ranging in altitude from 2,200 to 4,300 metres (7,200 to 14,100 ft). Lowland gorillas live in dense forests and lowland swamps and marshes as low as sea level, with western lowland gorillas living in Central West African countries and eastern lowland gorillas living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near its border with Rwanda.
(#1) Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking, although they sometimes walk upright for short distances, typically while carrying food or in defensive situations. (#2) A 2018 study investigating the hand posture of 77 mountain gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (8% of the population) found that knuckle walking was done only 60% of the time, and they also supported their weight on their fists, the backs of their hands/feet, and on their palms/soles (with the digits flexed). (#3) Studies of gorilla handedness have yielded varying results, with some arguing for no preference for either hand, and others right-hand dominance for the general population. (#4)
The eastern gorilla is more darkly colored than the western gorilla, with the mountain gorilla being the darkest of all. The mountain gorilla also has the thickest hair. The western lowland gorilla can be brown or grayish with a reddish forehead. In addition, gorillas that live in lowland forest are more slender and agile than the more bulky mountain gorillas. The eastern gorilla also has a longer face and broader chest than the western gorilla. Like humans, gorillas have individual fingerprints. Their eye color is dark brown, framed by a black ring around the iris. Gorilla facial structure is described as mandibular prognathism, that is, the mandible protrudes farther out than the maxilla. Adult males also have a prominent sagittal crest.
A gorilla's lifespan is normally between 35 and 40 years, although zoo gorillas may live for 50 years or more. Colo, a female western gorilla at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, was the oldest known gorilla at 60 years of age when she died on 17 January 2017.
